It’s been a season, Mammoth fans.
Saturday night, the Colorado Mammoth fell to the Calgary Roughnecks, 15-12, in the West Division Semifinal at Pepsi Center, cutting their playoffs run short.
Though the Roughnecks were the first to score, the Mammoth took off on a six-goal run early in the first quarter.
With a 6-1 lead in the second quarter, the Mammoth killed two penalties in between two Roughnecks tallies. By halftime, with seven offensemen each notching a goal, Colorado led 7-3.
The Roughnecks bounded back in the second half with a three-goal run that brought them within one goal of the Mammoth by 5:29 in the third quarter. In another six minutes, Curtis Dickson tied up the game for Calgary, 8-8.
The Mammoth stayed within one point of their Rocky Mountain rivals until 6:18 in the fourth quarter when Jeremy Noble scored an unassisted goal to retake an 11-10 lead for the Mammoth. Two minutes later, goals traded by Dane Dobbie and Jacob Ruest gave the Mammoth the lead once more, 12-11. But in the final 6:37, the Mammoth were unable to hold on to their one-goal lead.
At 10:35, Dane Dobbie’s sixth goal of the night knotted the game, 12-12. In the final four minutes, two goals by Dickson, one on an empty net, extended Calgary’s lead to 14-12. Then, with just six seconds left on the clock, one more empty net goal by Tyson Bell sealed a 15-12 Division Semifinal win for Calgary.
Jacob Ruest and Ryan Benesch led the Mammoth in scoring, both with two goals and three assists. Zack Greer scored the sole Mammoth hat-trick of the game, tallying three goals and one assist.
Though the Mammoth’s season ended more quickly than they had hoped, the Mammoth took a step forward this season with an 11-7 regular-season record, beating their 9-9 regular-season record from 2017.
