MAMMOTH COACH TRAINS CHINA'S ELITE

For Mammoth strength & conditioning coach Joel Raether, a typical off-season consists of training high school, collegiate and professional athletes in Colorado. But this off-season has been anything but typical. The talented sports performance coach is currently in China for his third business trip, consulting and working with the Chinese Olympic Committee.

Raether’s visits have taken him to Beijing, Kunming, Nanjing and Shanghai, and he’s trained the Olympic Committee’s athletes from men’s and women’s volleyball, track & field, judo, short-track speed skating, fencing, badminton, men’s and women’s basketball, and soccer.

"It has truly been a unique experience that I did not anticipate I would have ever been exposed to when I became a performance coach,” said Raether. “Being able to consult and work with some of these athletes and teams has been extremely challenging and rewarding at the same time. Not knowing Mandarin (yet) and needing to utilize a translator or strictly utilizing demonstration as a means of teaching and communicating has definitely made me grow as a coach and learn new ways to be effective."

The best part of the trips?

“Getting to see another part of the world,” explained Raether. “The Chinese people have a fascinating culture and they have been very determined to make sure that we had the opportunity to experience it in our free time. Being able to see the Great Wall, the Ming Dynasty tombs and also the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square is something that I can cross off my bucket list."

Soon, it’s back to the United States for the man who’s worked with the Mammoth since 2007…and back to work with the lacrosse team and TPEA, THE Performance Education Association, a performance training and educational initiative and consulting service Raether co-founded.

Raether’s expertise has taken his around the world. Now, he’s eager to share his wisdom with you. Coach Raether offers speed, agility and lacrosse-specific training for athletes of all ages. On Saturday, September 28, Raether will host a one-hour training session prior to the Colorado Mammoth RECYCLAX lacrosse tournament at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Email him today at exscience@hotmail.com for more information about the session or regarding private training opportunities.
