Govett Named Team Coordinator for Canadian National Team
The Canadian Lacrosse Association announced today that Colorado Mammoth president and general manager Steve Govett has been named the team coordinator for Team Canada’s men’s national team, and will assume the position through the 2014 FIL Men’s World Championship. His responsibilities include the selection and naming of the roster that will look to win its third men’s world title.
“It is the highest honor to assist my native country in its quest for gold in a world championship that will be held right here in Colorado,” said Govett.
The Federation of International Lacrosse announced last year that Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (Commerce City, Colo.) will host the event.
Govett, who played for Team Canada in 1994 and 1998, assisted the national team en route to its gold-medal-winning performance in 2006. The following year, he won an indoor world championship as the squad’s general manager. He now assumes similar job duties for the field team.
“I am delighted that Steve will be joining us on our 2014 team,” said Dave Huntley, National Team Director – Men’s Field. “Steve shares my passion and enthusiasm for our Canadian team and it will be fun to work with him once again. We will rely heavily on his leadership and vision as we prepare for the 2014 World Championship in Denver.”
The Burnaby, British Columbia native maintains dual citizenship in Canada and the U.S., and served as general manager of the indoor national team for the red, white and blue for four years. Govett has nearly two decades of experience in the National Lacrosse League as a player and executive, and has overseen all business and team operations of the Colorado Mammoth since the franchise relocated to Denver in 2002.
Team Canada will take on Team USA in the ‘Duel in Denver’ international friendly at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on September 8, 2012 at 7pm MT. Tickets are on sale now at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park box office, all Colorado Dick’s Sporting Goods retail kiosks, online at TicketHorse.com, or by calling 303.53.HORSE.
