Tuesday, June 26, the Mammoth re-signed defenseman Joey Cupido to a five-year contract, pending league approval.
“I would like to thank everyone in the Mammoth organization for making this the best place to play in the National Lacrosse League. I could not be more excited to be back in Colorado, playing in front of the best fans in the league, for the next five seasons,” said Cupido. “The Mammoth is the premier organization in the NLL. The last few years we have been building towards something special, and I want to be a part of the group that ultimately brings a championship back to Denver.”
Cupido will enter his eighth season with the Mammoth in 2019, having been selected by the Mammoth in the fifth round (38th overall) of the 2011 NLL Entry Draft.
In the 2018 season, with the “A” on his jersey for the first time in his career, Cupido was second in points scored by NLL defensemen (27), posting the second-most shorthanded goals in the NLL (5). Cupido also recorded the second-most loose balls (111) for the Mammoth, and moved into fifth in Mammoth history with 607 regular-season loose balls in total.
After his outstanding season, the Mammoth awarded Cupido with the “Inspirational Player of the Year” award. As decided by Mammoth fans, “Lightning” also received the 2018 Fan Choice award.
Mammoth General Manager Dan Carey said, “Joey is important to the future success of this organization. He is devoted to the team and has continued to develop as a leader and an elite player within this league. Joey’s willingness to sign a five-year contract shows his commitment to the Mammoth and we’re happy to have him back.”
