The Colorado Mammoth have named Dan Coates team captain for the 2018-19 season. Fellow defensemen Joey Cupido and Robert Hope will serve as assistant captains.
This will be Coates’ third season wearing the “C”, having first been named Captain in December 2015 after serving as an assistant captain for two seasons (2014-15). In his first two years as captain, Coates was also a Mammoth Teammate of the Year recipient (2016) and a two-time Mammoth Defenseman of the Year recipient (2016-17).
“It’s truly an honor and a privilege to be Captain of such a great organization,” said Coates.
The captain explained his mentality heading into the 2018-19 season, saying, “I think a great captain is someone who takes care of the team by first taking care of himself; someone who leads by example on and off the field.”
Cupido, returning for his second-straight year as Mammoth assistant captain and his eighth year on the Mammoth’s defense, is a two-time NLL Transition Player of the Year (2015,18) and NLL First-Team All-Pro selection (2015,18).
"Hope and I have been here for a while, and Coates the same number of years as me. We're guys who have been around the block a little bit," said Cupido. "Hopefully the guys recognize how committed we are to this franchise and follow an example we try to set every night we're out on the floor."
Hope, Mammoth captain in 2018, is a fifth-year Mammoth defenseman, a two-time Mammoth Defensive Player of the Year recipient (2016,18) and a two-time Mammoth Teammate of the Year recipient (2017-18).
In preparing for Saturday's season opener against the San Diego Seals, Hope said, "The younger guys haven't really been here before, so it's going to be busy this first game-day. We want to let them know to take everything in stride and to really build off of what they take in at practice and off of their experiences throughout the next couple days.
We want to make sure that each and every time we come together we're prepared to put in the work."
The Mammoth return to the turf tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. MST, for their first-ever matchup against the San Diego Seals. The Mammoth's season opener will also be the team's second-annual teddy bear toss benefiting A Precious Child. Tickets and teddy bears are still available at AltitudeTickets.com.
