Here's an open ended question for anyone who wants to fire the coach:
Can you name for me one team in any sport who has fired its coach and then promptly turned around and won a championship?

Mike Keenan - New York Rangers 1994
Joe Torre - New York Yankees 1996
John Gruden - Tampa bay Bucs 2002

And the Cardnials have a chance to do it this weeked.

Those are just off the top of my head. I am sure I can find more if I look.

Aren't most of these the year after the coach was fired, not during the season? The Cards hired their guy back in 07. I think the point was the same year you fire your coach and then still go on and win it all.

If that is the case then it is an unfair point. 9 out of 10 times when a coach is fired midseason, the team is already out of the playoffs.

McMahon just isn't an emotional coach like we want him to be. I think however that he is best to stay here until the all star break, that is a great time to judge where a team is at. If they have only one or two wins then maybe a change is needed, but what if we win all the games leading to the all star game?

And Look at what McMahon has had to deal with during this sub par run, did you forget about the injuries late in the season last year? And this year, there are many new faces that arent used to playing with this team yet, but they will start to get better. In any sport when a player is put onto a new roster, no one can expect them to be completely in sync with the rest of the team.

RELAX there are still 13 games left

The point is pretty simple. Its not done with winning a championship in mind. All 4 major sports generally don't fire a coach in the middle of the season because its seen as too hard to try to institute a new system and a new staff all whilst trying to beat the best athletes at your given sport. The big 4 sports are all full time leagues with huge salaries and millions in commercial money riding on team performance. I'm pretty sure if it worked, they would do it more often, but it doesn't so they almost never do.

Can it be done? I suppose so. But for every 'true' example of a coach leaving mid season to be replaced by another coach who whins it all in the same season (that part is important), there are countless others that are worse off before they ever get better.

Compound that with the ideas that Nll teams aren't full time pros and they have a very short (compared to MLB and NHL) season and you see the HUGE challenges.

It seems to me that NLL coaches can only do so much. They can call set plays and teach team principles, but the players have to exectue. I'm not sure that they are and they would to a man probably agree because thats what elite athletes do. Calling time outs (they get 1 per half) or something like that is really minor in the scheme of things. Just wait around and see how it turns out.

I'm going to lock this thread here... but only becuase it's evolved WAY beyond asking the GM anything. I'll start a new one over on the Mammoth Talk board to continue the thread.

Again, thank you for the lively discussion.

Edit: The thread is already there at http://www.coloradomammoth.com/forums/v ... php?t=1512
