MAMMOTH MAKES CAREY FIRST-ROUND PICK;
TRADES SELF FOR SECOND-ROUND CHOICE

The Colorado Mammoth used its first pick of the 2005 National Lacrosse League entry draft to select forward Dan Carey of Canisius College. Carey, a 5-foot-11, 182-pound native of Peterborough, Ontario, was the seventh overall selection and the Mammoth’s only first-round pick.

The Mammoth then traded forward Brad Self to Philadelphia in exchange for the Wings’ second-round pick. Colorado used that selection, the 16th overall, on forward Ryan Marshall of Duke University.

Carey was a late entry into the draft – held Monday night at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta – after recently renouncing his college eligibility. He currently plays indoor lacrosse for the Ontario Lacrosse Association’s Peterborough Lakers, who are defending their Mann Cup title, Canada’s national championship. Carey was second on the Lakers and eighth in the OLA this summer with 66 points on 30 goals and 36 assists in 18 regular-season games.

"Dan Carey is a tremendous addition to our team," Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. "He has great shooting ability – especially from the outside – and gives us a key left-handed weapon."

Marshall, a 6-foot, 200-pound native of Scarborough, Ontario, starred at Duke last season as the Blue Devils advanced to the national championship game. He has played this summer in Canada for the Burnaby Lakers of the Western Lacrosse Association, tallying 20 points on 12 goals and eight assists in 11 games.

"Ryan is a great two-way player and he has shown some impressive scoring skills as well," Govett said.

The Mammoth used its third-round selection on Shawn Williams of Surrey, British Columbia, before picking University of Denver standout Scott Davidson in the fourth round.

Davidson, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound forward from Guilford, Conn., was an honorable mention All-American last season. He was fourth on the Pioneers with 24 points on 15 goals and nine assists in 14 games.

The Mammoth used its fifth-round pick on Andy Glen of Peterborough before making its final selection on Adam Hughes of Cortland State in the sixth round.

The expansion Portland (Ore.) LumberJax made Brodie Merrill of Georgetown University the first overall selection in the draft. Merrill, a defenseman from Orangeville, Ontario, and his brother, Patrick, are the first brothers in league history to be selected first overall in the entry draft. Patrick, also a defenseman, was selected first by the Toronto Rock in the 2002 draft.
