CASEY POWELL’S CONTRACT COMPLETES SIGNINGS

The Colorado Mammoth has completed its off-season signings of returning players as forward Casey Powell agreed to a one-year contract on Tuesday, pending league approval. A ten-year NLL veteran whose name is synonymous with the sport itself, Powell was acquired by Colorado in a trade from Rochester in March.

“Casey was stellar for us down the stretch last season,” said Mammoth president & general manager Steve Govett. “He is a tremendous passer and finisher, and is like having a coach on the floor.”

The West Carthage, N.Y. native is the only American in the history of the NLL to be named the league’s Most Valuable Player. He enters the 2014 season with 271 career goals and 378 career assists, and boasted a stretch of five-straight seasons with 80-plus points (2007-2011).

In six games with the Mammoth in 2013, Powell scored nine goals and dished out 23 assists. The 5.4 points-per-game average equates to an 85-point campaign over 16 games. (This season, the NLL schedule has increased to 18 games.)

Powell set the all-time national high school career points record, and later, graduated as Syracuse University’s all-time leading scorer. He was a two-time Division 1 National Player of the Year, and was the first-overall selection in the 1998 NLL Entry Draft.
