The National Lacrosse League announced today that Mammoth forward John Grant Jr. has been named the captain of the 2012 West Division All-Star Team. The game will be held this Saturday, February 25 at 5pm MT at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

“I’m honored to be named captain of the West Division All-Star squad,” said Grant. “It will be my first time in box lacrosse that I will have the ‘C’ on my chest. I will try to represent the Mammoth well.”

An eight-time all-star, Grant leads the NLL in goals (23) and points (52), as is on pace to shatter the NLL single-season points record. Earlier this season, he became the fifth player in league history to 1,000 career points, and will become the third to reach 500 career goals later this year.

Following the Mammoth’s 12-7 victory over the Swarm on Saturday night to improve to 6-0 on the season, Colorado head coach Bob Hamley praised Grant’s performance.

“He (is) a big-time player. When you need the big goals and the big assists, he is there. His leadership has been outstanding this year…”

Mammoth forwards Adam Jones and Gavin Prout, defenseman Rory Smith and goaltender Chris Levis will also represent Colorado in the showcase.

Edmonton’s Shawn Williams and Minnesota’s Andrew Suitor were named West Division assistant captains. Buffalo’s John Tavares will don the ‘C’ for the East, and Toronto’s Colin Doyle and Rochester’s Pat McCready are assistant captains for the squad.

The undefeated Mammoth, off to the team’s best start in franchise history, takes on the Calgary Roughnecks this Friday, February 24 at 7pm on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center. Tickets are on sale now at the Pepsi Center box office, all Colorado Dick’s Sporting Goods retail kiosks, online at TicketHorse.com, or by calling 303.53.HORSE.
